From the lines and conics of elementary geometry the reader proceeds to general curves in the real affine plane, with excursions to more general fields to illustrate applications, such as Harris’ book The Geometry of Schemes, and Harris’ earlier book Algebraic Geometry is a beautiful tour of the subject. For background, it will be handy to have your favorite commutative algebra book around.
